Hinds County election officials unexpectedly returned to the Hinds County Courthouse on Sunday afternoon to finalize votes.
On Saturday afternoon, Hinds County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Claude McInnis announced that officials would return on Monday to finalize votes, but changed plans in order to speed the process up.
At 7 p.m., the Hinds County Election Commission reported unofficial numbers for the Hinds County Sheriff's race. Tyrone Lewis leads the race with 18,788 votes. Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin has 16,702 and Johnnie Bowden with 1,500. The current totals do not involve a runoff.
On Tuesday morning the committee is expected to vote on the final numbers and officially certify the votes.

I hope Sheriff McMillin does the right thing and moves on. He had a good run and was a good sheriff, but apparenty most of the people want to see someone else with the job. I question whether he can even win now in a runoff. I wish Mr. Lewis the best in his apparent new job. He's a good man and he cares about the citizens of Jackson just like McMillin did and does. With Mr. Lewis' background I can't fathom him being unqualified to do the job.
