Carol C. West, a law professor at Mississippi College, died yesterday at age 67. An expert in domestic relations, women's issues and criminal law, West donated some of her academic papers from 1972-1993 to the American Association of Law Libraries.
West got her bachelor of arts from Mississippi University for Women, a master's of library science from the University of Southern Mississippi and her law degree from the University of Mississippi.
She taught at Mississippi College School of Law since 1975. Also an expert in legislation, West served as director of the Legislative Reference Bureau and counsel to legislative committees in the Mississippi Legislature from 1970 to 1975. Before that, she was a catalog librarian at the University of Mississippi School of Law from 1967 to 1970, and she was head of public services at University of Virginia School of Law from 1966 to 1967.
West was a member of the American Bar Association, the Mississippi Bar, and the Hinds County Bar Association (and a member of its board of directors from 1994 to 1997).
She served two terms on the board of directors of the Mississippi Women Lawyers Association. West belonged to the American Society of Legal History.
She served on the Mississippi Library Commission. West consulted the Republic of Armenia on developing a Parliamentary Library. She also consulted the National Assembly of Tanzania on Parliamentary library services.
West had been a secretary on the Mississippi Task Force on Gender Fairness in the Courts, and was a member of the Mississippi Judicial Advisory Study Committee, Consulting Group on Criminal Code Revision.
