A total of six tornadoes hit Mississippi on New Year's Eve damaging homes and businesses, the National Weather Service reports.
Tornadoes touched down in Vicksburg and in Attala, Oktibbeha, Kemper, Noxubee, Hinds and Rankin counties. The same storm system killed seven people in the Midwest, but Mississippi reported no deaths and only minor injuries. As of Saturday, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported 34 homes, five mobile homes, 40 businesses and 20 agricultural businesses suffered major damage throughout the state.
Today, caseworkers from the American Red Cross are visiting affected families. Anyone with emergency needs after the storms should call 601-353-5442.
