About 70 corps members of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps Southern Region will arrive in Mississippi tomorrow to begin 10 months of community service and leadership development.

After one month of training, members will travel throughout the southeast helping communities rebuild from the spring tornadoes and the Mississippi River flooding. The Southern Region serves 11 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

In August, a group of team leaders will lead seven teams of trained corps members to work on various projects that nonprofit organizations will sponsor in five of the 11 Southern Region states.
AmeriCorps NCCC is a service program for men and women ages 18-24 who a travel through the United States, serving communities on six to eight-week projects related to: disaster preparation, response, recovery and mitigation; environmental stewardship; energy conservation; urban and rural development; and infrastructure improvement.
