Let's kick this summer off right, and let's do it tonight. Come to Art Remix at 6 p.m. at the Mississippi Museum of Art (380 S. Lamar St.). This free downtown event features music by Dangermuffin and Valerie June. The Jackson Free Press is a sponsor. Music, food, cool people and an arty backdrop make for a downtown party. Saturday, buy your produce at a Farmers Market near you. Mississippi Farmers Market (929 High St.) hosts its Summer Kick-off at 8 a.m. with free ice cream, plus music by Bob Gates. Olde Town Market in downtown Clinton starts at 9 a.m. (Be sure to check out our fresh Summer Food Issue on newsstands while you are out.) Music fills Saturday's calendar. The Medgar Evers Homecoming events conclude with a parade starting at Freedom Corner (Medgar Evers Boulevard and Martin Luther King Drive) at 10 a.m. and a blues show at The Room (421 W. Woodrow Wilson Ave.) at 5 p.m. with Dr. D, Chick Willis, Denise LaSalle and more. Rock the South 2011 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium is at 2 p.m. and includes performances by the Newsboys, the David Crowder Band, Tenth Avenue North and Family Force 5. Jackson Irish Dancers hosts its Mostly Monthly Ceili at Fenian's at 2 p.m. If lunch or dinner and a movie are in your plans, check out Art House Cinema Downtown at the Russell C.
