A four-year downtown resident and a thriving socialite who enjoys the nightlife and all things Jackson, Julie Skipper once vowed to never return to Mississippi upon leaving for scholarly pursuits.
The Jackson Free Press names Skipper the JFP Freelancer of the Month of April for her informative biweekly column, "Girl About Town."
A former practicing lawyer and now an employee of Watkins Development, LLC., Skipper is an avid member of the Jackson social scene and loves every minute of it. Her column features stylistic blessings and qualms as well as social extravaganzas and adventures that could render a Lady Gaga concert a bore.
Finding fun things to do in Jackson is never an issue for Skipper. Recently, she joined forces with friends and donned an "Alice in Wonderland" costume to wander around town creating flash mobs and invading local bar venues such as Bottoms Up.
"Word of mouth and photos happen, and next thing you know Jill Conner Browne was asking if we would do a parade," Skipper says. "Who knows. Now, maybe we will be making appearances at parties all around town."
The 32-year-old hails from Meridian and swore to never return to Mississippi after graduating from Millsaps College. After completing her law degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., Skipper realized that she could not practice law for the rest of her life. She says it feels like she was brought back here to be a part of making Jackson what it can and should be.
Skipper became an employee of Watkins Development after practicing law for four years. There, she has time to make Jacksonians aware of the events and opportunities available in the city.
"It's the kind of place that if you want to make something cool happen, you can," Skipper says of Jackson. "There is always something going on, and if there is not something going on, you can start it yourself."
This "girl about town" really strives to maintain open lines of communication with fellow residents of the Jackson area. She wants to continue to inform Jacksonians of the happenings in the area, and keep people up-to-date on all things Jackson.
"There is so much going on, so much life and a great creative class," Skipper says. "I think it is fun, through my column, to help people see that there are really cool things and really cool people here in town if you just get out and take advantage of them."
