The Jackson Police Department received a $3-million grant Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The U.S. Department of Justice COPS Hiring Grant will provide funds for the department to hire up to 25 officers.
"This is great news for the city of Jackson," Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. said in a statement. "This grant, along with what we have already budgeted in the 2011-2012 budget, will allow funding to be available to boost our force to 525 officers. This will increase visibility and enhance our crime fighting efforts immensely."
