A restaurant that closed downtown almost 20 years ago has now reopened on Woodrow Wilson Avenue, where it offers an eclectic mix of food.

Sameerah's (1038 W. Woodrow Wilson Ave., Suite B) offers a wide variety of dishes, from catfish and collard greens to herbal teas and smoothies, from oxtails and jerk chicken to salmon and vegan-friendly fare.

Sameerah Muhammad, who owns the restaurant, said she first opened Sameerah's downtown in 1982, where it attracted a clientele as diverse as its menu offerings.

"It brought black, white, Asian--every nationality together," Muhammad said.

The restaurant closed in 1992, and Muhammad operated another restaurant downtown for a year before moving to Washington, D.C.

Sameerah's is open from 6 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant also hosts live entertainment Thursday nights. Call 601-965-6143 for more information.

Jackson Restaurant Week Announces Charity Winner

Friends of Children's Hospital will get the $10,000 prize from the first Jackson Restaurant Week.

Patrons cast more than 3,500 ballots at local restaurants to determine the winner during the week of Oct. 2-8. During the week, 31 local restaurants offered specialty dishes and deals on complete meals for fixed prices. Each time a patron ordered off the special menus, he or she got to vote for one of five local charities to get the award money.

Friends of Children's Hospital supports the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children, providing money for things such as building projects, new hires, games for the children and Christmas decorations.

The other charities in the running for the prize money were Community Animal Rescue and Adoptions, Parents for Public Schools: Ask for More Arts, the Mississippi Firefighters Memorial Burn Association and the Alzheimer's Association. The Jackson Free Press was a sponsor of the event.

Organizers of Jackson Restaurant Week said in a statement that all five charities had overwhelming community support, and the week had a positive economic impact on businesses in the Jackson metro area.

Food Depot to Open New Store

A vacant supermarket building on Terry Road in South Jackson will get a new tenant soon. Food Depot expects to open a store in the old Brookshire's building early next year. Brookshire's closed its two stores in Jackson, including the Terry Road location, early last year. Food Depot, a Kosciusko-based chain, also owns a grocery store on Northside Drive. Owner Roy Sims was not immediately available for comment.

Merchants Foodservice Expanding

A Hattiesburg-based food distributor hosted a ribbon cutting today for its expanded facility in the Hawkins Field Industrial Park. Merchants Foodservice operates in nine states, and employs 273 people in Jackson, where it operates a distribution center and warehouse, as well as a training center.

Sameerah's (1038 W. Woodrow Wilson Ave., Suite B) If anyone knows, how are the prices and the portions on the to-go plates and where about on Woodrow Wilson are they? Is there a online menu by any chance?
