JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The body of state Sen. Alice Harden will lie in repose Thursday at the Mississippi Capitol in Jackson, a day before her funeral.
Harden, a Democrat from Jackson, died Dec. 6. She was 64.
The former educator was the first black woman elected to the Mississippi Senate, winning office in 1987 and serving until her death. She was known as an advocate for public schools.
Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home says Harden's body will lie in repose at the Capitol from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.
Visitation is 4-6 p.m. and a memorial service begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at Black's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson.
Harden's funeral is 11 a.m. Friday at Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church, with burial in Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
