Lairy Wins Special Election to Replace Late Father

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Unofficial results show Angela Turner Lairy will replace her late father Bennie Turner in the Mississippi Senate.

With all precincts reporting, Lairy had 4,143 votes, or 71 percent, while Kenny Fowler had 1,705 votes, or 29 percent. WTVA-TV reports (http://bit.ly/13BlnJQ ). Both ran without party labels.

Lairy, a lawyer from West Point, will serve the remainder of the term of her father, who died in December.

District 16 covers all of Clay County and parts of Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Noxubee counties.

It's another in a series of special elections to replace lawmakers who resigned or died. Voters from the same region will select a replacement for state Rep. David Gibbs, a West Point Democrat who died Sunday. Jackson voters must replace Sen. Alice Harden, who also died.
