Fire Guts Old Armory on Miss. State Fairgrounds

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A fire has heavily damaged an armory on the Mississippi State Fairgrounds—an 86-year-old building that was already on a list of endangered historical structures.

There was no immediate word on what started the blaze Tuesday at the Hinds County Armory. The two-story brick building, which resembles a castle, has been undergoing renovations.

The building is on the western end of the State Fairgrounds, about two blocks from the Capitol.

In 2011, Mississippi Heritage Trust put the armory on its list of the state's 10 most endangered historical structures. The group says the building was completed in 1927 for the Mississippi National Guard. It was a training facility for nearly 50 years but was damaged in 1979 by a flood and hasn't been used since then.
