1. Two Republican state lawmakers want to pass laws to impose the death penalty for certain crimes against children.
2. In addressing the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership's annual meeting last Wednesday, Bryant spoke frequently about the capital city.
3. Tiger Tech @ JSU, an Apple Authorized Campus Store located on the first floor of the Jackson State University Student Center, hosted its grand opening Jan. 31 at 10 a.m.
4. Ward 1 Councilman Quentin Whitwell called for quick votes on zoning and elections during the Jan. 21 council meetings.
5. Sens. David Blount, D-Jackson, and Sean Tindell, R-Gulfport, have each introduced legislation that would give oversight of several federal and state anti-violence grants.
6. Democrats in the state Legislature are advocating a number of bills that put equal pay for women in the forefront.
7. Physicians are alarmed about a new Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi policy that could take effect as early as Feb. 1. The insurance giant proposes to end prescription coverage for medications prescribed by out-of-network doctors.
8. A proposal to create a system of violent-crime strike forces around the state passed a Senate committee on Thursday.
9. Jackson’s resident oyster expert, Jesse Houston, will preview dishes for his Saltine restaurant Feb. 24.
10. Neo-African abstract expressionist painter Danny Simmons will visit Jackson State University in February.
