- Two Republican state lawmakers want to pass laws to impose the death penalty for certain crimes against children.
- In addressing the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership's annual meeting last Wednesday, Bryant spoke frequently about the capital city.
- Tiger Tech @ JSU, an Apple Authorized Campus Store located on the first floor of the Jackson State University Student Center, hosted its grand opening Jan. 31 at 10 a.m.
- Ward 1 Councilman Quentin Whitwell called for quick votes on zoning and elections during the Jan. 21 council meetings.
- Sens. David Blount, D-Jackson, and Sean Tindell, R-Gulfport, have each introduced legislation that would give oversight of several federal and state anti-violence grants.
- Democrats in the state Legislature are advocating a number of bills that put equal pay for women in the forefront.
- Physicians are alarmed about a new Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi policy that could take effect as early as Feb. 1. The insurance giant proposes to end prescription coverage for medications prescribed by out-of-network doctors.
- A proposal to create a system of violent-crime strike forces around the state passed a Senate committee on Thursday.
- Jackson’s resident oyster expert, Jesse Houston, will preview dishes for his Saltine restaurant Feb. 24.
- Neo-African abstract expressionist painter Danny Simmons will visit Jackson State University in February.
