Project Rezway is an annual gala that showcases a fashion show with a twist: All the designs are made from at least 75 percent recyclable materials. Past designers have used items such as Mardi Gras beads, shopping bags and coffee filters in their looks.

Keep the Rez Beautiful, which hosts Project Rezway, is a nonprofit organization formed in 2010 that dedicates itself to litter cleanup and prevention and the beautification of the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Keep the Rez Beautiful volunteer executive director Jeannine May and board member Debbie Veeder organized Project Rezway, which will be at the Mississippi Craft Center. The event also includes food, specialty drinks, a silent auction and music on the patio.

"People that I wouldn't think would enjoy it, they are just overwhelmed with the event when they see ... what you can make out of recyclable items," May says. "We even had a red solo-cup dress."

An award show called the Rezzy Awards will take place during the evening. Keep the Rez Beautiful will use the awards to honor top organization volunteers making a difference in the community.

Project Rezway is currently looking for designers and models for the 2014 fashion show. "Come and have fun," Veeder says, encouraging applicants to join in regardless of skill level. "It's just about using your imagination."

Project Rezway is 6:30-9:30 p.m. April 17 at the Mississippi Craft Center (950 Rice Road, Ridgeland). Tickets are $25 and include a Keep the Rez Beautiful membership. All proceeds go to litter cleanup and beautification efforts around the reservoir. For more information, email [email protected], or visit keeptherezbeautiful.org.
