There's never a slow news week in Jackson, Miss., and last week was no exception. Here are the local stories JFP reporters brought you in case you missed them:

1. During an at-times testy Hinds County Board of Supervisors meeting, supervisors elected a new president and changed the board's policy for choosing presidents and vice-presidents in the future.
2. Rick Hill retired last week after working 41 years with the city and an emotional goodbye following an honor from the Jackson City Council.
3. Jackson Redevelopment Authority board President Ronnie Crudup recently testified about a lawsuit JRA brought against Farish Street Group.
4. On Jan. 1, Arden Barnett, founder of entertainment company ardenland, finalized a long-term lease with building owner Mike Peters of Peters Development for Duling Hall in Fondren.
5. Legislators from across Mississippi gathered in Jackson Monday, Jan. 7, for the beginning of the 2014 legislative session, and Jackson's leaders were there to welcome them.
6. Despite the popular image—and some notoriously unscrupulous practitioners—state law binds the state's lobbyists to strict rules.
7. Christmas has come and gone, but Jackson leadership is hoping the Mississippi Legislature will find a little room to stuff a few more much-needed gifts in the city's stocking.
8. For a real wellness boost in the new year, hop on the Trace and drive about four hours northeast, until you begin to see signs for Tishomingo State Park.
9. JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray and other school superintendents say that because Mississippi isn't fully funding its education formula, their districts have fewer classroom aides, larger class sizes, outdated computers and aging buses.
10. Local restaurant Georgia Blue, which focuses on southern cuisine, has expanded into three locations in only a few short years.
