Bill Would Finance New UMMC Med School Building

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Lawmakers are advancing a $31 million bond bill to finance a new medical school building at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

House Bill 787 passed the Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday. It moves to the full House for more debate. After that, it would go to the Senate.

UMMC officials say the current medical school building is decades old and is inadequate for today's needs. Gov. Phil Bryant is among the officials supporting construction of an up-to-date building on the Jackson campus.

In 2013, the Legislature approved $4.5 million in bonds to pay for planning and design of the medical school building.

The state issues bonds as long-term financing for construction of new public buildings.
