There's never a slow news week in Jackson, Miss., and last week was no exception. Here are the local stories JFP reporters brought you in case you missed them:
- Bishop Ronnie Crudup of New Horizon Church International left for Africa on Oct. 7, but that didn't delay the filing of the Federal Election Commission report for his super PAC, All Citizens for Mississippi, which was due Oct. 15.
- The rate of abortion in the African American community will hasten the downfall of McDonald's, Beyonce and Jay-Z as well as the black press, said several black clergymen who spoke Wednesday at a rally at Mississippi's last abortion clinic.
- It seems everyone wants to pass the buck on the Westside Trailer Park, which is the concern of Canton citizens and Maureen Simpson, executive director of Canton Redevelopment Authority, who believes the real issue is a human rights one.
- Facing suspension from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-funded programs over Farish Street handling, David Watkins told HUD he won’t go down without a fight.
- Mayor Tony Yarber’s inaugural gala raised and spent more than $85,000, including $33,155.17 to the Jackson Convention Center.
- Celia Barrett Design, a boutique interior-design firm based in Jackson, recently completed renovations on 1908 Provisions in the historic Fairview Inn.
- Last week, Mayor Tony Yarber launched his new youth-oriented listening tour, during which he'll travel to Jackson schools to address topics that affect the city's young people.
- The city of Jackson is likely to appeal a recent court decision that would could cost the already cash strapped capital more than $500,000 in fines.
- Successes and failures have shaped Arden Barnett and his entertainment company, Ardenland, into a force for Fondren and the Jackson music scene.
- Author Darcey Steinke will sign copies of her book, "Sister Golden Hair," beginning at 5 p.m. Oct. 21 at Lemuria Books.
