Raymond native Julie Durr gets to fulfill a life-long dream as the owner of Filter Coffee House (128 Port Gibson St., Raymond, 601-857-8102), which opened Dec. 19.
"My wife has been in the legal profession for a while, but she's always wanted to open her own deli or coffee shop," Julie's husband, Dannon, said. "We did the research and found out that Raymond didn't have a coffee shop, so I told her to go for it ... since we figured it would do well since Raymond is a college town and because you don't (wait) until you're 80 to follow your dreams."
Julie is the primary operator of the family-owned shop, and the couple's daughter, Madison Durr, works in the shop, as well.
In addition to coffee, Filter has tea, frappes, espressos, smoothies, paninis, soup, brownie bites, muffins, cheesecake and pie. Filter's coffee and tea are brewed with local ingredients from provider Coffee & Tea Works in Raymond.
Filter Coffee House is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The shop has live music on Thursday and Friday nights, and college students and faculty get a 10-percent discount with ID.

2015 Metro Jackson College Fair
Parents & Kids Magazine will sponsor the 2015 Metro Jackson College Fair Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jackson Convention Complex. Representatives from colleges across the country will be present to meet with Mississippi juniors, who are invited via their school counselors.
Dan Mullen, head coach of the Mississippi State University football team, will be a guest speaker at the event. The college fair, which has been held since 2004, provides information on schools, applying for financial aid and other topics to help students and parents make college plans.
The Metro Jackson College Fair is promoted statewide in magazines, through press releases and individual letters to public and private high school counselors. In the immediate seven-county area, there are over 15,000 high school students already invited to attend.
While most high schools will pre-register, the event is open to the public as well. For information, call 601-366-0901.
