RAYMOND, Miss. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies were reviewing video surveillance footage Friday to determine what happened during a Mississippi jail incident that left two male officers injured.
The jail's Rapid Response Team answered a call about an officer down Thursday night, Hinds County sheriff's department spokesman Othor Cain said. An inmate "made direct contact" with two detention officers at the Hinds County Detention Center at Raymond, Cain said, and they were taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
"It was a very abrupt move that caught them off guard," Cain told The Clarion-Ledger.
"When you unpack the words 'direct contact,' it means that he made physical contact with our officers. If that inmate just used his fists or a weapon of sorts is still under investigation," he said.
SWAT officers initiated a rapid response in the detention center, Cain said.
"When you're responding to an officer down situation, you want to make sure you're well-prepared," he said. "They assessed the situation and got it under control within 30 minutes. They did a total sweep of Pod A, which was on lockdown for 30 minutes, and collected evidence."
Neither the guards nor the inmate has been identified.
