JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — More than 2,000 third-graders passed Mississippi's reading test when they took it a second time, leaving about 3,400 students statewide at risk of failing.
The remaining students will get a third try later in the summer, after many districts hold classes aimed at improving reading levels.
The second round of testing was in May, and it boosted to 91 percent the share of third graders who passed statewide. The passing share after the first round of tests was 85 percent of Mississippi's 38,000 public school third graders.
Some who fail will advance to fourth grade under certain exemptions, although that number won't become clear until later.
At least 24 school districts boosted their share of students passing by 10 percentage points or more.
