WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia lawmakers will consider banning official travel by city workers to any state with laws that discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
The city's mayor, Democrat Muriel Bowser, has already banned city travel to North Carolina because of a new law that excludes LGBT people from protections against discrimination. The law also requires transgender people to use public restrooms that correspond with their gender at birth.
The bill introduced Tuesday by independent Council member David Grosso (GRAH'-so) would make the travel ban part of city law. It would apply not just to North Carolina but to any state that approves similar laws. Grosso says it would likely apply to Mississippi because of a law signed on Tuesday that allows businesses to refuse service to gay couples.
