Mississippi State Backup QB Staley Transfers

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State's quarterback race is down to three candidates.

The school announced on Friday that sophomore quarterback Elijah Staley has been granted his release and will transfer.

Coach Dan Mullen said in a statement that Staley "has always been a hard worker and a great teammate. We wish him nothing but the best as he pursues another opportunity."

Staley played in two games last season as a backup. He completed 3 of 5 passes, including one for a touchdown, and also ran for 18 yards on three carries.

Mississippi State is trying to find a starting quarterback to replace Dak Prescott, who is now in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, and is expected to play Saturday night against the Los Angeles Rams. The three remaining candidates for the job are sophomore Nick Fitzgerald, junior Damian Williams and redshirt freshman Nick Tiano.
