JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Not only is a state commission putting the Jackson school district on probation, but members ordered an audit of all the district's schools, expressing concern over safety and discipline.
The Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation made the votes Tuesday after a state Department of Education official told members that Jackson was violating 19 state accrediting standards.
Most importantly, the June accrediting audit faulted the district for discipline practices that earlier had brought complaints from a teachers' union and questioned the effectiveness of teaching observed at a number of schools.
Jackson Superintendent Cedrick Gray says the "sky is not falling" for the state's second largest school district. Jackson now has 60 days to submit a plan to fix problems. The additional audit might not be ready until sometime in 2017.
