There's never a slow news week in Jackson, Miss., and last week was no exception. Here are the local stories JFP reporters brought you in case you missed them:

1. Despite ongoing controversy over his role in a Hinds County criminal case, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood was bragging last week after several local court wins, including sending a Jackson man to prison for "depraved heart murder."
2. Mayor Tony Yarber's former executive assistant, Kimberly V. Bracey, filed a complaint in federal court on Thursday accusing him of sex discrimination, sexual harassment and a hostile workplace within City Hall, and of having different work-related sexual liaisons going at the same time.
3. The Republican presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump, visited the capital of the Magnolia State on Wednesday night—first for a private fundraiser at the convention center, then for a rally at the Mississippi Coliseum where he talked mostly about race and immigration—and got one fact about African American teenagers dramatically wrong.
4. The Southern Poverty Law Center, representing a group of Jackson residents, filed a motion for summary judgment Monday, telling Hinds County Chancery Judge Dewayne Thomas that the only dispute in the case involves interpreting the state constitution.
5. Darryl Brady, Jackson's regional benefit office director for the Veterans Administration, said his office is doing everything they can to reach out to military vets in all 82 counties in Mississippi.
6. Residents in Hinds and Madison counties that live in District 72 had the opportunity to elect a new representative to the Mississippi House of Representatives in a special election on Tuesday.
7. Mayor Tony Yarber proposed his budget to the Jackson City Council last week, shooting for a $7.4-million decrease in spending across the board.
8. The Jackson Zoo's board of directors has voted unanimously to drop its affiliation with a national accreditation agency in the wake of news last week that its yearly contribution from the City of Jackson is expected to drop by $250,000 for fiscal-year 2017.
9. Jackson Public Schools remained stable or saw improvement across the third- through eighth-grade English language arts and math assessments in 2015-2016 Mississippi Assessment Program, or MAP, results that the Mississippi Department of Education released Aug. 16.
10. Gov. Phil Bryant joined local leaders Monday to mark the addition of a new air service to the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport.
