The Big Fix Clinic (100 Business Center Pkwy., Suite B, Pearl), a high-volume pet sterilization program that Mississippi Spay and Neuter operates, is offering free spay-and-neuter surgeries to cats in zip code 39213, the northeast Jackson area, for as long as funding is available.
After a woman in the area burned a stray cat to death in October 2015, Mississippi Spay and Neuter started a special fund to help fix cats in the area to help prevent future acts of cruelty toward animals. The fund initially applied only to feral cats, but this year, the organization expanded it to accommodate pet cats as well as stray and feral cats.
The Big Fix Clinic's employees fix cats brought to the clinic in the morning and provide a rabies vaccine, then release them that same afternoon. Feral cats also receive an ear-tip, in which the tip of the animal's ear is blunted, which is an internationally recognized symbol that allows a person to tell if a feral cat has been fixed from a distance.
MS SPAN has humane traps available to borrow with a $50 deposit. The traps are small wire cages, large enough for a cat to move around, with a door on one side, a folding door on the other and a trip plate on the bottom. As a cat comes into the cage to get food placed as bait, it triggers the plate, and the trap closes behind them.
The clinic is also hosting an annual rabies vaccine and microchip clinic for pet cats and dogs that are more than three months old on Saturday, May 14. MS SPAN also fixes wild dogs and has specialized humane traps available for them, but the current free spay-and-neuter program is only available for cats.

Ribbon Cutting for Shayna's Boutique
Shayna Holmes of Ridgeland has operated her online women's clothing store, Shayna's Boutique, through social media and a website since November 2015. When she began to run out of space in her house to store clothes to sell in March 2016, she decided to open a storefront at 707 Beau Pre Drive, Suite A, in Ridgeland. Her husband, Jonathon Holmes, designed and built the interior of the shop, including displays for clothes and jewelry, and the store's counter and dressing rooms.
On May 18, the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Shayna's Boutique, at which Holmes plans to have refreshments and a drawing for a $25 store gift card. The event begins at 10:30 a.m.
Shayna's Boutique offers clothes ranging in size from small to 3XL in a variety of styles, such as glam, Bohemian and flair, as well as shoes and locally crafted jewelry. Clothing is generally within a $30 to $60 price range, and jewelry ranges from $15 to $75. The store also offers complimentary gift-wrapping.
The boutique is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information call 769-300-2519 or visit shaynasboutique.com.
Sweat Sauna Studio
Aimee Jalbert and Rachael Elmore, co-owners of Sweat Sauna Studio (1111 Highland Colony Pkwy., Suite B, Ridgeland), opened their business at The Township at Colony Park in April 2016. Sweat Sauna offers infrared heat therapy, in which customers can relax in a private room equipped with a personal infrared sauna pod, which uses dry infrared heating to increase the body's core temperature and induce sweating on the cellular level.
The infrared sauna sessions last 30 minutes and are a great way to detoxify the skin, Jalbert says. Infrared heat therapy can help promote weight loss, pain relief, lower blood pressure, improved circulation and skin rejuvenation. Also available is a Basswood Signature Sauna, a wood sauna that also uses infrared heating and is suitable for all sizes, handicap-accessible and fits up to two people at a time.
First-time clients can purchase one session for $30. Sweat Sauna also has membership packages available offering four sessions per month for $59, eight sessions for $89, 12 sessions for $129 and 20 sessions for $149. Memberships of eight sessions per month and up also receive a free "buddy pass" for a client to invite a guest once per month. The studio also offers one-year packages of five sessions for $125, 10 sessions for $200 and 20 sessions for $350. Members that subscribe to the studio's email list will receive special promotions.
