JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The city of Jackson has laid off 28 employees in preparation of creating a balanced budget.
Media outlets report that affected employees were given 30 days' notice of the layoffs on Wednesday. The city hasn't presented a breakdown of the eliminated positions by department.
City spokeswoman Shelia Byrd says city officials made the decision to lay off city employees about two months ago.
The final city budget for 2017 hasn't yet been voted on.
Byrd says other efforts to balance the budget will include a hiring freeze and a moratorium on capital purchases.
