There's never a slow news week in Jackson, Miss., and last week was no exception. Here are the local stories JFP reporters brought you in case you missed them:
- A series of campaign mailers the Mississippi Republican Party sent out around the state this week misleadingly paint Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mike Espy as a "corrupt" criminal for charges he was fully acquitted of in the 1990s.
- Congressman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., called on Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant to drop a lawsuit that could end ACA protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
- On. Nov. 6, the same day as the national midterms, voters choose between Democrat Mike Espy, Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Republican Chris McDaniel in a U.S. Senate special election; there will be no partisan identifications on the ballot for the special.
- This year will be an entertaining ride for Mississippi voters, who will have elect all four congressional representatives as well as two senators to represent the state in Washington, D.C.
- David Baria, the man who currently serves as the House minority leader in the Mississippi Legislature, shared his story, his plans for Mississippi, and why he thinks he can move the state forward.
- Mississippi leaders' refusal to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act left about 300,000 Mississippians without access to health care and led to the closure of several rural hospitals deprived of funds—which has emerged as a 2018 issue in the midterm elections.
- Crystal Marshall has been at Henley-Young Juvenile Detention Center up on a hill in a warehouse-lined area of Jackson on capital murder charges since right around Valentine's Day—less than two weeks after she turned 14 years old.
- Arthur Lamar Adams was sentenced to 235 months in federal prison for wire fraud involving a large, multi-state Ponzi scheme involving more than one hundred million dollars and hundreds of victims.
- Former Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus, who served as Secretary of the Department of the Navy under President Barack Obama, endorsed Democrat David Baria's bid for U.S. Senate on Oct. 29.
- U.S. Rep Steven Palazzo, Mississippi's 4th District congressman, praised Donald Trump's efforts to end a "migrant caravan" the day after a mass shooting at a synagogue in Pennsylvania by a man obsessed with the issue.
