JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Republican appointed last year to be Mississippi's agriculture commissioner is now seeking election to the statewide post.

Commissioner Andy Gipson of Braxton filed qualifying papers Wednesday at the state Republican Party headquarters.

He served a decade in the state House of Representatives before Republican Gov. Phil Bryant chose him to succeed Cindy Hyde-Smith when she left the agriculture commissioner's job to become a U.S. senator last April.

Wednesday was the first day for candidates to file for statewide, regional and county offices in Mississippi. The qualifying deadline is March 1. Party primaries are in August, and the general election is in November.
