Nearly 2,000 minors have been separated from their families since U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the policy in April. If a person doesn't arrive at an appropriate port of entry to claim asylum, the crossing is deemed illegal and prosecuted even if the person does not have a criminal history.
