Lucky Town Brewing Co. is reporting on its Facebook page that the startup microbrewery received unanimous zoning approval to move into a building in midtown.

Lucky Town—which started making more of its own beer in 2012 after a successful Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign—is one of only a handful of breweries operating in Mississippi and will be the first in Jackson in a long time.

The city of Jackson has announced that a portion of South Medgar Evers Boulevard will be closed for the next three days. The closure starts at the intersection known as Freedom Corner, at Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and continues south to Pocahontas Street at Society Ridge Baptist Church.

Public Works crews are working to repair a broken water valve, and it's expected to take three days, weather permitting. Detour signs, they say, will be posted.

While this can be considered inconvenient, we've been lucky, so far, despite the constant below-freezing temperatures that have gripped the Jackson over the last 48 hours. A similar freeze in 2010 burst pipes all over the city and forced repairs all over the city.

JACKSON, Miss. –Roderick Nicholson, Mayor of Terry, pled guilty to five counts of embezzlement, and advised the court he would resign from his position as Mayor of Terry effective immediately.

From January 2011 through December 2012, the Mayor made personal credit card payments using the Town of Terry’s funds, as well as submitting false bills to be paid by the Town of Terry.

“Considering the size and limited budget of the town, this case is even more egregious,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering. “My office has already issued a demand to the Mayor in the amount of $56,966.27, and I look forward to returning the money to the Town and justice being served in this case.”

Mayor Nicholson was arrested by Agents from the State Auditor’s Office in March for driving the Town of Terry’s vehicle to his federal job.

Circuit Court Judge William Chapman ordered Nicholson to be held in custody until sentencing December 7, 2015.

And perhaps that’s the whole point of the event, to look like one thing while actually being something close to the exact opposite of the thing. It’s a contrivance, as real and unscripted as a reality show, with much the same intent: to appear to be something it is not while selling a message or product.

Jackson residents are invited to take part in a second telephone town-hall meeting with Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson.

The city of Jackson will host a town hall meeting to discuss and answer questions the public may have regarding the proposed water and sewer upgrades. The next Town Hall Meeting will take place in Ward 3 on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church at 2323 Powers Avenue.

Concerned or interested citizens are encouraged to attend.

There's a new sheriff in town. Well, technically there's a new Honorary Deputy Sheriff Chaplain in town -- and his name is the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. The Hinds County Sheriff's Department posted 30 photos on its Facebook page of the longtime civil rights leader's swearing in as an honorary county cop yesterday.

Jackson has made it to the top three of a pretty cool list: We're no. 3 on Matador Network's Top 10 Most Artistic Towns in America. We've made it among the likes of cities such as New Orleans, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Marfa, Texas, Sante Fe, N.M., and Detroit. Matador Network used three criteria for the cities: Their art scene is relatively small, emerging artists have access to a low cost of living, and it has a strong community of visual artists, musicians and filmmakers. Congrats to Jackson's artists!

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and the City of Jackson is hosting another Town Hall meeting tonight to discuss the 1-percent local sales tax option. The meeting is set for 6 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church at 6000 Old Canton Road in Ward 1.

City leaders are putting the option for the tax to voters next Tuesday ( Jan. 14). If passed, it would levy an extra 1-percent on all sales in the city except groceries, prescription drugs, cable TV packages, hotel rooms and food and beverages at restaurants.

Due to newly projected expenses not incurred in the past, important logistical decisions could not be made in a timely fashion, resulting in the cancellation of the annual nighttime parade.

The City of Jackson will host a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28. at Anderson United Methodist Church South at 1315 West McDowell Road to give residents a chance to discuss and ask questions about the mayor's proposed rate hikes on water and sewer services.

A press release from the city yesterday said the meeting was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday night, but it was incorrect, according to the mayor's interim-media liason Latrice Westbrooks.

Westbrooks said Mayor Chokwe Lumumba will be on hand, as well as the city's Director of Public Works Dan Gaillet.

The first is set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the E-Center on the campus of Jackson State University at 1230 Raymond Road. The second is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Word and Worship Church at 6286 Hanging Moss Rd.

The mayor has already hosted two such meetings in the past week, and called them "very well-attended and informative" at Tuesday's meeting of the City Council.

Jacksonians will vote on the referendum on Jan. 14, 2014.

With less than two months left before Jacksonians head to the polls to decide the fate of a proposed 1-percent sales tax increase, Mayor Chokwe Lumumba is taking his message to the people.

Lumumba will host a town hall-style meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1 at Pearl St. African Methodist Episcopal Church at 2519 Robinson St.

The Mayor will discuss the 1% sales tax proposal, and explain the use of the tax revenue to make infrastructure improvements. The meeting comes as Jackson's City Council debates whether to push the referendum vote to a later date in order to improve it's chances of passing with the 60 percent threshold it must have to become reality.

Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and the City of Jackson will host three additional town hall meetings to discuss the merits of the proposed 1-percent sales tax option currently before Jackson voters, the city announced Monday morning.

Wards 1 and 2 will meet at 6 p.m. on Dec. 19 at Word and Worship Church at 6286 Hanging Moss, Wards 5, 6 and 7 will meet at 6 p.m. on Dec. 22 at the Battlefield Community Center at 953 W. Porter St. and Wards 3 and 4 will meet at 6 p.m. at St. John M.B. Church at 4895 Medgar Evers Blvd.

Jacksonians will vote on the referendum on Jan. 14, 2014. If approved, the city would gain a penny on every dollar spent for all retail sales except for groceries, prescription drugs, hotel rooms, food and drinks at restaurants and television cable packages.

In the past, the NFL Combine has been held behind closed doors, with the best college football players trying to impress scouts without the public seeing any of the action. That changed in 2004 when the NFL began to broadcast the event on its own NFL Network.

College-football fans were finally able to see their favorite players go through drills, and NFL fans were able to see who their favorite teams might draft. However, the event still wasn’t open for the public to see up close and personal.

Last year, 1,500 fans got a chance to see the combine live at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It was the first time the league let fans into the combine to watch the events live.

While NFL ratings were down a bit this year, the league has been trying more and more to make offseason events matter. The NFL is working on becoming a year-round league with fans being able to get closer than ever to action.

When the NFL Combine takes place from March 3-5, 2017, the league will select a lucky group of 6,000 fans will get to see it all from Lucas Oil Stadium. The league will hand out those tickets for free, but they are non-transferable.

They won’t be just in the stadium watching from the stands for every event, either. Fans will be able to stand nearby as they watch the 225-pound bench press and cheer on players trying to complete as many reps as possible.

Fans will also be able to run a 40-yard dash, vertical, broad jump and other combine events from the convention center called “Combine Corner.” The league will allow fans to run an obstacle course, show of their form tacking against tackling dummies, and face “The Gauntlet,” where they can catch passes from a JUGS machine, which is a machine that shoots football for players to practice catching.

Before fans can take part in the physical events, they will have to sign a waiver that releases the league from any liability in case of injury. There are also events for those who want to visit the Combine but don’t want to take part in the physical events.

Fans will be able to interact with players at the convention center as members of the media conduct interviews, and the players will sign autographs. There will also be press conferences from head coaches that fans will be able to attend.

Visitors will have opportunities to take photos with players, NFL legends, the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the actual bench where players will do the 225-pound bench press. They can also pretend that their favorite NFL team just drafted them and get pictures wearing a jersey from that team.
